I didn't have much time tonight to really go at it with my current game of Sins of a Solar Empire. I think I'm now in the mandatory "I have a huge fleet, plenty of planets generating tons of ships, and now I'm going from planet to planet mopping up" phase. I wiped out the pirates and now I've taken an enemy planet: damn those were some huge and spectacular battles!
In many ways, Sins reminds me of Kohan. Kohan, for example, was the first RTS I remember where you could retreat your units, let them recharge, and head right back into the battle. Battles could get huge and could keep going: it's amazing how being able to recharge ramped up the intensity. Sins does that as well.
One of the things I really appreciate is that my units seem to have half a brain: I'm not telling them "attack this, now attack this, now attack this". Most of the time, I tend to play zoomed out: units are abstract icons ("playing with X's and O's," so to speak). Because I'm not micromanaging these ships, when a battle is underway, I am able to zoom in and watch the battle. It's amazing how the atmosphere changes, from the sedate and relaxed distance to the close-up, with engines roaring and energy weapons blasting.
I think, after this, I will try a larger scenario with a harder difficulty level. I fully expect to lose big-time, but it should prove an interesting. First, though, I need to actually get through this scenario!
